Guy Ritchie on long-delayed Sherlock Holmes 3: “I’ve moonwalked out of that”

February 27, 2023 by EJ Moreno

If you want more from two of Guy Ritchie’s most popular movies, the wait will be a bit longer.

The British filmmaker took time from promoting Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, his latest Jason Statham-focused action film, to update fans on Aladdin 2 and Sherlock Holmes 3.

Ritchie spoke to Collider and offered up his feelings on the future of a Sherlock Holmes movie, and the wait isn’t entirely Ritchie’s fault.

Bluntly, Ritchie tells Collider that he has no real control over when Sherlock happens and is awaiting a call from Robert Downey Jr. for more information. Ritchie says, “Well, honestly, I left this up to Robert [Downey Jr.]. So Robert wanted to be in charge of this. The ball’s in his court, so he’s in charge of the script; he’s in charge of the whole thing. I’ve moonwalked out of that until there’s a time for me to get involved.”

Initially scheduled for release in December 2021 with Ritchie producing and Dexter Fletcher directing, there’s been no word on plans for Sherlock Holmes 3 since the pandemic threw production into a tizzy.

As for Aladdin 2, Ritchie seems more present and feels like Disney left a good impression on the cult filmmaker.

“I’d very much like to. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun,” the filmmaker says. “I would very much like to; we’ll wait and see. We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it’d be great to do; it would be great to go back there.”

Aladdin was a huge success for Disney in 2019, bringing in just over a billion at the global box office and finding a home with Disney fans. Sherlock Holmes is another fan-favorite series from Ritchie, as both films have made a collective billion dollars and received positive reviews from critics.

Guy Ritchie is certainly not sitting around for gigs to fall into his lap. Ritchie is finally releasing Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and he’s awaiting the April release of a war drama, The Covenant, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal. He is working on the spy thriller The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Henry Cavill and Eiza Gonzalez.

Super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) must track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world’s best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett), to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre arrives in cinemas on March 3rd in the US and on April 7th in the UK.
