Ryan Reynolds says Free Guy doesn’t really need a sequel

March 7, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Free Guy 2 is likely not coming anytime soon, and actor Ryan Reynolds might be okay with that.

After appearing at the Just For Laughs comedy festival at the O2 Arena in London, Reynolds spoke to Deadpool 2 actor Rob Delaney about the film and if there are any follow-ups in work.

Reynolds tells Delaney, “There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun. I would love it. But also, like, does everything fucking have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass, and then everyone go home.”

He adds, “So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one.’ No, the first movie validates the first one, and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”

Free Guy was released in August 2021 after being delayed two times by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film grossed $331.5 million worldwide on a $100–125 million budget. While it landed a solid 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and even received an Academy Award nomination for VFX, Free Guy came and went without much fanfare.

As Reynolds said, it’s fair to enjoy the first film’s success without putting out a sequel. With Deadpool 3 and countless other projects in the actor, the actor/producer won’t be missing too much by skipping a Free Guy sequel.

Next up, Reynolds will star in IF by filmmaker John Krasinski. The film features an ensemble cast of Reynolds, Krasinski, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fiona Shaw, Cailey Fleming, Bobby Moynihan, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell. IF is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 24th, 2024, followed by Deadpool 3 on November 8th 2024.
