Galaxy Quest TV series is finally happening at Paramount+

April 18, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

A small screen spinoff of the cult 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest has been trying to achieve lift off for years, but now it finally appears to be happening over at Paramount+.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Television are in the early development stages, with a search underway to find a co-writer to work alongside Breaking Bad alumni and original Galaxy Quest executive producer Mark Johnson.

Galaxy Quest‘s journey to the small-screen is a story in itself, with the original cast of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell and Enrico Colantoni set to return for a follow-up series that never got out of the development stages.

Then in 2016 How Did This Get Made‘s Paul Scheer was hired to write the show for Paramount TV Studios and Amazon, but that was shelved following the sad passing of Alan Rickman.

Directed by Bill & Ted Face the Music‘s Dean Parisot, Galaxy Quest told the story of the cast of a space opera television series who have to play their roles for real when an alien race lands on Earth and seeks out their help. It only made $90 million at the worldwide box-office, but it enjoyed an extended life on home-video, and has developed a passionate fanbase in the intervening years.

There’s no official word yet on whether any of the original cast will be involved.
