Mason Thames and Nico Parker to play Hiccup and Astrid in live-action How to Train Your Dragon

June 1, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The cast is now in place for the How to Train Your Dragon live-action adaptation. Mason Thames and Nico Parker will lead the project, playing Hiccup and Astrid who were voiced by Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera in the original movies.

Thames is fresh off his work in The Black Phone, starring alongside Ethan Hawke. Parker recently played Sarah Miller in Season 1 of HBO’s The Last of Us, playing an impactful brief appearance.

Universal Pictures is heading production on this live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon. Dean DeBlois will write, direct and produce this new version; DeBlois is the filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy.

2010’s How to Train Your Dragon was a massive success upon its release, bringing in nearly $500 million and earning Academy Award nominations for best-animated film and best score. The second and third films were also vastly popular, earning nominations for the best-animated movie during their respective years. The trilogy has grossed more than $1.6 billion at the box office. The films have spawned multiple television series aired on Cartoon Network, Netflix, and Hulu.

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon is currently slated for a March 14th, 2025 release.
