Hayley Atwell says “frustrating” Multiverse of Madness Marvel cameo didn’t “really serve Peggy very well”

July 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Hayley Atwell knows what she wants from her characters and is coming clean about her feelings on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

While promoting her latest film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One pre-Actors Strike, Atwell stopped by the Happy Sad Confused podcast to explain why the Doctor Strange sequel let down her role of Peggy Carter, aka Captain Carter; she holds nothing back in the interview.

She tells the outlet, “I’m like, ‘That wasn’t my choice!’. When she was like, ‘I could do this all day,’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently, you can’t, so egg on your face. That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”

Atwell does note that her time voicing Peggy Carter on the Disney+ animated series, What If?, was a bit more rewarding.

“I felt like I had much more to do in the ‘What If…?‘ animation series. I mean, any actor will tell you, to be able to go into a booth in effectively your pajamas and do an animation is great fun because you’re focused on the voice as the instrument and your main performative tool…[by contrast], it felt like a frustrating moment in ‘Strange.'”

Hopefully, Atwell’s time in her new franchise will be more rewarding. You can see the actress starring in the new film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which is out now. Read our review here.

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is playing now in cinemas, 4DX, and IMAX.
