Sydney Sweeney confirms Spider-Woman role in Sony’s Madame Web

August 10, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Sony Pictures’ upcoming Madame Web will open the Spider-Verse like never before, showing a different side to Spider-related stories.

At least that’s what actress Sydney Sweeney teased in a new piece with Variety. Speaking with the outlet, Sweeney dove into her career, filming Euphoria and, of course, Madame Web.

When asked about landing the role of Spider-Woman (believed to be the Julia Carpenter incarnation), Sweeney expressed, “I was freaking out, of course. I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”

Giving more details about the project, the actress notes, “I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be. Quote that! That’s a quote because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about.”

Sweeney wouldn’t spill more specific details if she hopes her character will have an expanded role the future, but gave Variety a coy yes before taking a long sip of tea. The actress also didn’t offer any details on any potential stand-alone Spider-Woman movies; she just smiled and shrugged at the question.

Along with Madame Web, Sweeney has several other feature film projects on the horizon, including a reboot of Barbarella for Sony Pictures and the horror film Immaculate which reteams her with The Voyeurs director Michael Mohan.

Madame Web is directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) and features a cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Emma Roberts, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott.

Madame Web is set for release on February 16th, 2024.
