It has been a long and frustrating journey for TRON fans and their wish of a third film. More than a decade after TRON: Legacy was released, TRON: Ares was set to begin production today with director Joachim Rønning at the helm, but due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes production has been delayed and Rønning is speaking out on the “extremely frustrating” circumstances of the strike.
Writing on his Instagram account, Rønning said “Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.”
He continued by urging all parties to continue negotiating, saying “The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.”

TRON: Ares will “focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.” The film will star Jared Leto (Morbius) as the program Ares and Greta Lee (The Morning Show) as a video game programmer and tech CEO. Also starring in the film is Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) and Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets).
