Underworld creator teases the future of the franchise could be television

September 28, 2023 by EJ Moreno

It’s been quite a few years since we’ve visited the vampire and werewolf-filled world of Underworld.

Filmmaker Len Wiseman agrees with that sentiment, telling EW that he believes a return can happen any day now. But the latest installment could move from the big screen to the small screen.

In a new piece from Entertainment Weekly regarding Underworld turning 20, Wiseman opens up about more films. “There is a fashion that is in the works. I can’t talk about it, but there is a future to Underworld for sure, says the filmmaker.

When pressed on that statement and asked about the talk surrounding the TV series a few years back, he responded: “That’s the one I’m referring to.”

Len Wiseman, co-creator of the franchise, directed the first two entries of the long-running action-horror franchise. The five movies, in total, ultimately grossed $539 million against a combined budget of $207 million, becoming a cult hit for genre fans.

Underworld has been on hiatus since 2017 when Underworld: Blood Wars opened with generally negative reviews but still grossed over $81 million worldwide.

Currently, Wiseman is working on the John Wick spin-off Ballerina with Ana de Armas. In the same EW interview, he notes, “We’re on a pause right now, but I’ve just finished the director’s cut. Had an amazing shoot. It’s a really fun movie.” Ballerina is expected out in cinemas next year.
