Director Scott Derrickson is unsure about Labyrinth sequel status

October 8, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Director Scott Derrickson is no stranger to the world of horror, but could we soon see him get lost in the Labyrinth? Well, not if the latest update is any indication…

Long attached to a follow-up to the 1986 cult classic, Derrickson is finally opening up about what it’s been like working on the project and why it’s been delayed for so long.

Derrickson spoke to ComicBook.com about his new horror film, V/H/S/85, but took the time to give an update on the long-gestating sequel, noting, “I don’t know what’s happening with that. We never got the script all the way to a place where the studio wanted to make it, but I was very proud of the work that we did on it.”

He adds, saying how difficult it is to get something like this off the ground, “And it’s a hard, hard project to turn into something commercially viable because it’s so imaginative and surreal that there’s no way that it can be done cheaply. And at the same time, it’s so daring and different that it is a tough movie for a studio to feel competent that it has enough commercial value to earn a profit.”

The filmmaker concludes, “So I think that it’s a tough nut to crack, but all I can tell you is I’m very proud of the work that we did on it. We certainly had a great film in mind.”

Lastly, Derrikson was asked how he’d have handled The Goblin King without David Bowie, teasing: “I think we had a really cool idea, but I don’t want to blow that in case the movie does get made.”

Scott Derrickson is joining other horror filmmakers for V/H/S/85, which hit Shudder this weekend. Check out our review here…

An ominous mixtape blends never-before-seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscasts and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten 80s.

V/H/S/85 is airing now on Shudder.
