The Black Phone will ring again as sequel set for 2025

October 30, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have announced that The Black Phone will ring again as a sequel to the 2021 hit horror movie is set to arrive in cinemas in June 2025.

Based on a short story by Joe Hill, The Black Phone was directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Doctor Strange) from a script by his regular collaborator C. Robert Cargill and followed Finney (Mason Thames), a young boy who finds himself kidnapped and held captive by the child kidnapper and serial killer The Grabber (Ethan Hawke).

The Black Phone grossed $161.4 million worldwide, ten times its budget, and the sequel is reportedly being eyed as the “launch of a sinister new franchise” (Derrickson’s V/H/S/85 segment ‘Dreamkill’ also takes place within the same ‘universe’).

Me: I'm only going to make a Black Phone sequel if we have a really great idea.

Joe Hill: So I've got a really great idea.

Me and Scott 30 seconds later: So we're making a Black Phone sequel.

The above post from C. Robert Cargill appears to suggest that he and Derrickson will be returning for The Black Phone 2, although beyond the release date there’s been no further word on talent in front of or behind the camera, nor any plot details.

The Black Phone 2 is set for release on June 27th 2025.
