Christopher Nolan on whether he’s open to more franchises like Bond

November 12, 2023 by EJ Moreno

With Oppenheimer making a big splash and heading towards the awards season, Christopher Nolan is looking towards the future.

It’s been quite some time since Nolan has done a movie within a franchise, and now it seems like the moment could be on the horizon. Speaking to Variety, Nolan could be heading towards a future filled with Bond, Batman, or who knows what else.

Nolan tells the trade he’s looking at what to do next, “Ideas come from everywhere. I’ve done a remake, I’ve made adaptations from comic books and novels, and I’ve written original screenplays. I’m open to anything.”

As the long-standing rumor of Christopher Nolan serving as the new Bond director swirls, the filmmaker addresses what it would take for a project like that to work. Key Number One: Creative Ownership.

Nolan declares, “As a writer and director, whatever I do, I have to feel like I own it completely. I have to make it original to me: The initial seed of an idea may come from elsewhere, but it has to go through my fingers on a keyboard and come out through my eyes alone.”

And to fuel some rumors of a possible Warner Bros return, which could mean a franchise film within that studio, Nolan calls their old feud “water under the bridge.” He says, “Pam [Abdy] and Mike [De Luca] and [David] Zaslav, they’re trying to do some great things with that studio, which is encouraging to see.”

Whether it’s with MGM and the Bond world or possibly another look at the world of superheroes, the future is bright for Nolan as he heads into the 2024 Oscars as one of the frontrunners.

Written for the screen and directed by Christopher Nolan, OPPENHEIMER, thrusts audiences into the mind of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), whose landmark work as the director of the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos Laboratory created the first atomic bomb.

Starring alongside Cillian Murphy’s titular scientist are Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Casey Affleck, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, David Dastmalchian, Olli Haaskivi, Jason Clarke, James D’Arcy, Michael Angarano, Guy Burnet, Danny Deferrari, Matthias Schweighöfer, Gary Oldman, Harrison Gilbertson, Emma Dumont, Devon Bostick, Trond Fausa, Christopher Denham and Josh Zuckerman.

Oppenheimer will be released on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on November 21st.
