James Gunn doubles down on soft DC reboot, says Matt Reeves’ Arkham series will be DCU canon

December 18, 2023 by EJ Moreno

If you were confused about the state of DC Studios and what will be “canon” during the upcoming reboot, buckle up for this development. James Gunn revealed via Threads that half of the work Matt Reeves is working on for DC will fall under James Gunn & Peter Safran’s DC Studios.

Gunn took to social media recently as he does to answer fan questions, the topic switched to all things Batman and, specifically, Reeves’ The Batman. Gunn answered the question concerning the state of the Reeves projects: “Right now, Matt is producing Arkham as a DCU series, so there’s just the two for now.”

This led to another fan wanting clarification about the Arkham series and how it falls into the Gunn and Safran DC Universe, dubbed Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. He notes, “Yes. We love Matt as a director and producer, so he’ll be producing stories both within his The Batman universe and within the DCU.”

The real doozy hits here when the Superman: Legacy director clarified that the Arkham series was always intended for the DCU and not part of Elseworlds, which holds projects like The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux. “It was one of the first pitches we bought when Peter and I came on board. I don’t know the permutations it went through before that time,” Gunn said.

The Batman Part II will still exist in its universe, but the Matt Reeves Arkham drama will likely be connected to Gunn’s universe. This feels like a continued trend in Gunn & Safran’s plans to soft reboot the DC movie universe with slight elements of the previous era (Peacemaker, Amanda Waller, and now The Batman) with what the new regime is cooking up.

Will it work? Only time will tell, but we are still a long way from the launch of the new DCU and Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, both set for 2025.

The official synopsis for Superman: Legacy states that the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy will fly in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
