Gary Oldman calls his work as Sirius Black in Harry Potter “mediocre”

December 31, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Sirius Black is a fan-favorite character from the Harry Potter books and especially the film franchise. However, someone who doesn’t love the movie version of the character is Gary Oldman, the actor behind the character in four Harry Potter.

Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused, Oldman shocked the host and viewers by dismissing his work in one of his biggest franchises.

“I think my work is mediocre in it,” Oldman tells Josh Horowitz. “No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.”

“It’s like anything if I sat and watched myself in something and said, ‘My god, I’m amazing,’ that would be a very sad day because you want to make the next thing better,” he adds.

Oldman does look back at the time fondly, mostly for helping his life. “Thank God for Harry Potter,” he said. “Thank God for Harry Potter. I tell you, the two — Batman and Harry Potter — really, they saved me because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then be home with the kids.”

Gary Oldman first debuted in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and appeared in three other films in the franchise. Check out the full interview below…
