Steven Yeun addresses Marvel’s Thunderbolts exit: “I probably pissed off too many people leaving”

January 6, 2024 by EJ Moreno

As we reported, Steven Yeun will no longer star in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, and the first comments from the actor following his departure have surfaced.

During a recent event for Louis Vuitton, Yeun finally opened up about what happened, and he even tried to leave the door open for a future appearance. Interestingly enough, though, we still never got confirmation on what role he would play.

Speaking with Variety, Yeun discusses his departure and falls back to the SAG-AFTRA strike as a defining factor.

“I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it, but Jake [Schreier], I know, is going to do an incredible job. It took a lot of drafts on email to make sure that I conveyed the sincerity of how sorry I was to have to back out,” explains the actor.

Yeun adds, “I wanna do a Marvel movie,” but fears this could hurt his chances for another opportunity, “I probably pissed off too many people leaving, so I’m just gonna say, ‘Thank you for having me.'”

Oddly enough, Marvel never confirmed the casting or the inclusion of Sentry in Thunderbolts.

Thunderbolts was initially set for release in July 2024. Filming has yet to begin, but actor Wyatt Russell revealed a potential spring start date.

Thunderbolts sees director Jake Schreier helming the project. Little is known about the plot, but the film will follow a group of villains-turned-heroes sent on missions commissioned by the government. Joining the cast are Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross.

Thunderbolts is set for release on July 25th 2025.
