Benioff & Weiss’ cancelled Star Wars film was about The First Jedi

January 14, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Have you wondered about the first-ever Jedi or the lightsaber’s origins? Well, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were looking to explore the beginning in their very own Star Wars film, which has since been canceled with the franchise looking to retool things.

While promoting their upcoming Netflix sci-fi series 3 Body Problem, we got a bit of insight into what almost was the origin story film for all things Star Wars.

Benioff & Weiss tell THR they intended to look at how it all began, with Benioff stating: “We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically, how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber.”

Weiss adds, “And we were annoyed as hell when [Rian Johnson, the duo’s longtime friend and 3BP producer] called his movie ‘The Last Jedi. He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.”

“[Lucasfilm] ended up not wanting to do a ‘First Jedi’ story. We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately, they decided they didn’t want to do that. And we totally get it. It’s their company and their IP, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for,” says Benioff.

3 Body Problem, from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, arrives on Netflix this March [watch the trailer here]. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm has also revisited its plans to explore the origins of the Jedi with a new film from from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold, which is one of several Star Wars movies in development.
