Melissa Barrera looks back on her “shocking” firing from Scream 7

January 28, 2024 by EJ Moreno

The horror community, especially fans of the Scream franchise, were shocked when news of Melissa Barrera’s firing from Scream VII dropped.

Following her comments concerning the Israel and Palestine, which were labelled as anti-Semitic, Barrera was dropped from the upcoming production. That caused a domino effect with both Jenna Ortega announced as exiting and new director Christopher Landon stepping away from the seventh Scream shortly after.

Now, speaking with Rolling Stone, Barrera gives her candid feelings on the situation with time to reflect, stating:, “I think everything that happened was very transparent on both sides, and I know who I am, and I know that what I said always came from a place of love and a place of humanity and a place of human rights and a place of freedom for people, which shouldn’t be controversial. It shouldn’t be up for debate.”

“So, I’m very at peace,” Barrera adds. “The people who know me in my family know the truth about me and where I stand, and I think most people in the world also do.”

We also got Barrera speaking to support her co-star and friend Jenna Ortega, adding: “Listen, Jenna is a good egg. She’s a good person, and we love each other. She would show up for me, and I would show up for her no matter what.”

Scream VI is currently going through a creative overhaul, with reports suggesting that Spyglass is looking to bring Neve Campbell and Patrick Dempsey back to the franchise for the next instalment.  As for Melissa Barrera, she has three films lined up for 2024: Your Monster, Abigail, and The Collaboration.
