John Waters says Liarmouth has cast Aubrey Plaza, but is still waiting on budget

April 11, 2024 by EJ Moreno

How are these legendary filmmakers not getting funds for their projects? We’ve heard the foes Francis Ford Coppola is facing with Megalopolis, and now John Waters is opening up about seeking funds to get his adaptation of Liarmouth off the ground.

As we reported, Aubrey Plaza has been attached to the film, but Waters is seeking financing for the project. While appearing at an event in Los Angeles this past weekend, the Pink Flamingos writer & writer spoke about the issues he has recently faced with Liarmouth’s film.

The filmmaking legend told fans, “My last film was 20 years ago, but I’ve been paid to write six other ones in that time: four different sequels to Hairspray, Fruitcake, which has gone through a couple of versions that still might happen, and Liarmouth.”

Waters also confirms that Plaza has actually landed the gig but mentions money is an issue: “The book was optioned. I turned in the script. They like the script, but we don’t have the money to make it. I’m thrilled that [Plaza is] going to [star in it], but we don’t have the money yet. I don’t know what’s going to happen, and so I’m trying to get Fruitcake going, too. We’ll see.”

Liarmouth follows Marsha Sprinkle, described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”

John Waters’ last movie was 2004’s A Dirty Shame, a polarizing filthy comedy that put the filmmaker in the dreaded “Director’s Jail.” Since then, though, he’s penned a few best-selling novels and has remained a staple in pop culture.
