Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms releases first image, adds more to cast

June 19, 2024 by Ricky Church

The second season of the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon may have just premiered, but that hasn’t stopped HBO from expanding the history of Westeros with the next upcoming prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. The first photo of the series has been released alongside more casting news.

The image shows Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters) as Ser Duncan the Tall, better known as Dunk. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms novellas which follows him and his young squire Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) as they travel across Westeros while keeping a secret about Egg’s true identity.

The official synopsis reads: A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros . . . a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

Joining Claffey and Ansell in the series are Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Bertie Carvel (The Crown), Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things), Daniel Ings (Sex Education) and Sam Spruell (Small Axe: Mangrove). Bennett plays Aerion Targaryen, Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Crawford as Tanselle, Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is written and executive produced by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, while House of the Dragon’s Ryan Condal also executive produces. Additionally, Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry) will direct three of the six episodes of the season.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is reportedly targeting a late 2025 premiere.
