Inside Out 2 topples Dune: Part Two at the box office with record-breaking second weekend

June 24, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Inside Out 2 has become a smash hit for Disney/Pixar in just two weeks. With its short run at the box office, the film has become the year’s highest-grossing movie, surpassing the fan-favorite Dune: Part Two.

With 2024 needing a boost, Hollywood is celebrating this as a win. Inside Out 2 dropped a wildly impressive 35% in its second weekend, bringing in $100 million. That is the best-ever second weekend, behind The Avengers ($103M) and ahead of last year’s Barbie ($93M).

Disney and Pixar’s sequel has generated $355 million in North America and $724 million globally. That puts it above the Denis Villeneuve sequel, which brought in $282 million domestically and $711 million worldwide. The animated film still has one primary market, Japan, which will open the film this August.

Premiering screens have been a massive draw for Inside Out 2, with the film already sitting as Imax’s fourth-highest-grossing animated title ever. It will lose most of its screens to A Quiet Place: Day One this weekend.

At this rate, Inside Out 2 is on track to become the first film of 2024 to hit a billion dollars. The film cost $200 million to produce.

Inside Out 2 is showing now in cinemas.
