Street Fighter movie heading to cinemas in 2026

June 28, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Sony and Legendary are going back to the streets with an adaptation of one of the video game’s biggest hits as a live-action Street Fighter film is coming to cinemas and has set its release date for March 2026.

Details for the film adaptation are under wraps. Talk to Me filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou were attached to direct the project but have since exited production. With the date being set, expect a new director in the coming weeks.

The franchise started with the 1987 arcade game Street Fighter, followed by Street Fighter II, which became a phenomenon. Then, in 1994, the first film attempt was made, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia. Decades later, the Street Fighter video game franchise is still making a splash, with the recent sixth installment of the mainline video game series coming out just last year.

Legendary acquired the live-action film and TV rights to Street Fighter in 2023 and has been hard at work to revamp the long-running fighting games for the big screen. Sony will distribute the film, co-develop it, and produce it with Capcom.

Street Fighter will debut in theaters on March 20, 2026. Stay tuned for more casting news, along with the new director for the project.
