Doctor Who spinoff The War Between The Land And The Sea reunites Russell Tovey and Russell T. Davies

July 27, 2024 by EJ Moreno

The Disney era has brought Doctor Who a lot of fortune, and now we get a new spin-off to add to its legacy.

The BBC and Disney+ have ordered The War Between The Land And The Sea, a five-part spinoff series that will be based within the Doctor Who universe. The series will star Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw alongside Doctor Who stars Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient.

The War Between The Land And The Sea focuses on the military organization UNIT. Per the logline, when a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war. We’ll also see the return of the Sea Devils, classic Doctor Who villains first seen in 1972.

Eagle-eyed Doctor Who fans will know Russell Tovey as he jas appeared in the main franchise before, starring as Titanic midshipman Alonso Frame in the episodes Voyage of the Damned and The End of Time. Tovey and Russell T. Davies also worked together on the sci-drama Years and Years.

Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Davies wrote the spinoff with Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches). The announcement was made at this year’s Comic Con.
