Peacock scraps its long-planned Battlestar Galactica reboot

August 5, 2024 by Gary Collinson

This may not be too much of a surprise, given that its been several years now since we last had an update, but Variety has revealed that Peacock’s long-planned Battlestar Galactica reboot is officially dead at the streamer.

First announced back in 2019 by NBC Universal, the project hailed from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and previously had both Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Derek Simonds (The Sinner) attached as showrunner at various points during its development.

The original Battlestar Galactica was created by Glen A. Larson and premiered back in 1978, running for a single season. It was rebooted by Ronald D. Moore in 2003 to much success, and it is believed that Esmail’s take would have been set in the same continuity as the latter series. There had also been plans for the new series to join a shared universe with a Battlestar Galactica feature film reboot from writer-producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), although that project also appears to have fallen by the wayside.
