Classic 2005 shoot-’em-up Under Defeat coming to consoles later this year

August 10, 2024 by Andrew Newton

Clear River Games, a video game publisher that specialises in bringing classic games to today’s gamers, has joined Japanese publisher and developer City Connection to bring the classic arcade shoot-’em-up Under Defeat to consoles.  This classic 2005 title will arrive digitally and physically for PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch this autumn and will also be digitally released on Xbox and Steam.

Under Defeat takes players to an alternative history of the world where all-out war has erupted against the ‘Union’. Taking control of the latest helicopter technology, players will move across a semi-isometric playfield where they will take on a non-stop barrage of enemy aircraft and ground vehicles with an assortment of devastating weapons.

This up-to-date remake features three game modes, these are:

  • Arcade Mode – This mode replicates the original arcade experience (as well as today’s consoles and televisions can) with a 4:3 ratio and a pseudo vertical screen.
  • New Order Mode – A mode that adapts the action to widescreen 16:9 ratio, and
  • New Order Mode + – Adds in little features, such as a ‘WARNING GAUGE’ that adds a risk/reward mechanic to assist players.

Each of these modes provides players with a choice of four unique helicopters that they can pilot into battle, each of which have different attributes and weapon systems.  There are also plenty of practice features included for each mode.

For those who liked the original’s music, players will be able to choose from all 3 existing soundtracks plus a new Boosted soundtrack created by Shinji Hosoe (Ridge Racer, Tekken) and his company, Super Sweep.

Under Defeat will release physically and digitally on Playstation and Nintendo Switch this autumn with Xbox and Steam digital versions arriving shortly after.
