Marvel’s Nova series will be inspired by Battlestar Galactica & Star Trek

September 8, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Since the Nova Corps was introduced into the MCU, fans have been waiting for the inevitable Nova project, and while it seems there’s still some time until we get to see it, Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum is giving fans some brief insight into the development process.

Speaking to Phase Zero, Winderbaum teased fans a bit about what to expect while also citing some very interesting inspiration.

“So, Nova is in development right now, but I’ll say we are developing more than we make,” he warns. “This is part of the new Marvel; we should talk about this. Because at Marvel, everything has a spotlight on it, and everyone gets super excited, and we love Nova and we want to get it right. So it’s in development. We’ve got a few things in development, and we’re not going to go [forward] on a show until we are happy with the pilot and the [show] bible. So it is in development now.”

When you go to this cosmic Marvel for a television series, it’s hard not to pull from some older material, and Winderbaum says they didn’t shy away from inspirations:

“I’ve really been inspired by what [Star] Trek has been doing over the last few years. I think those shows are incredible; that’s why we hired [Picard showrunner] Terry [Matalas] to do Vision Quest with us,” he said. “The Nova that is being developed right now is really an amazing ensemble piece. I shouldn’t say too much, but it’s a great cast of characters—it’s got shades of Trek, it’s got shades of Battlestar Galactica, but it also feels like if you know those comics, you know how heated that Richard Ryder world can get and it certainly embraces all that.”

Next up for Marvel is Agatha All Along, set to debut the first two episodes of the series this month. Following that, Marvel has Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World, and the space-themed The Fantastic Four: First Steps, all incoming in theaters in 2025. Stay tuned to Flickering Myth for more updates on all things MCU.
