Disney+ teams with Kenny Ortega for new YA Phantom of the Opera adaptation

September 9, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Disney+ wants to bring the timeless tale of The Phantom of the Opera to a new generation.

Deadline reports the studio is working on “a YA movie reimagination” of the classic 1909 novel titled Phantom. At the time of writing, no actors are attached to the roles.

This adaptation comes from Disney Branded Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, the powerhouse team behind studio hits like High School Musical and The Descendants.

It’s said that Disney wants to see this Phantom adaptation spawn into a franchise in the vain of those works. In his Disney return from his Netflix deal, Ortega will direct and executive produce Phantom under his production banner, The KO Company. Little is known about the project, but the spec script comes from Giovanni M. Porta from a story by Porta and Eric Bromberg.

For those unaware, The Phantom of the Opera is set in the Paris Opera House. It revolves around a mysterious, disfigured man, the Phantom, who lives beneath the opera house. He becomes infatuated with Christine Daaé, a beautiful young singer, and uses his influence to make her a star while trying to win her love.

Longtime Disney fans will know the studio toyed with this idea many years ago during the heyday of Disney Channel Original Movies. Phantom of the Megaplex was released in 2000 and took inspiration from Gaston Leroux’s novel but put a family-friendly twist to it.

Stay tuned for more news on Phantoms.
