Meet Athena as Andra Day joins Percy Jackson and the Olympians

November 12, 2024 by Ricky Church

The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has found its goddess of wisdom. Andra Day (The Deliverance) is the latest to join the series where she will play Athena, one of the Greek gods and mother to Annabeth.

The news was revealed on the series’ Instagram page with Day sending out a video message to the franchise’s fans, telling them “I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors.” Another post in Instagram showed Day with Leah Sava Jeffries’ Annabeth with the caption “Like mother, like daughter” in a new photo from the set of season two’s production.

Athena was mentioned several times throughout the first season of Percy Jackson, particularly in how she has had past troubles with her uncle and Percy’s father Poseidon. Annabeth also has a complicated relationship with Athena since she has only met her a few times and believes she has a lot to live up to as the daughter of the goddess of wisdom and one of Olympus’ most well-known and fearsome warriors.

Day joins fellow newcomers Daniel Diemer, Timothy Simons, Tamara Smart, Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal and Margaret Cho for the upcoming season.

The show is based on author Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians novel series with the second season adapting The Sea of Monsters. It will see Percy embark on a quest by travelling through the infamous Sea of Monsters for a mythical item that is the only thing that can save Camp Half-Blood from a new threat.

Percy Jackson returns to Camp Half-Blood one year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse La Rue, Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan, Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson, Glynn Turman as Chiron, and Toby Stephens as Poseidon.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will come to Disney+ in 2025.
