Amazon MGM Studios is looking to dust off another of its recently-acquired movie IPs, with Deadline reporting that a remake of the 1968 musical fantasy Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is in the works from Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson of Eon Productions.
Based on the 1964 children’s book Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car by James Bond creator Ian Fleming and directed by Ken Hughes from a script he co-wrote with Roald Dahl, the original film starred Dick Van Dyke as a down-on-his-luck inventor who spins a fanciful tale of adventure to his children on a day out in their rebuilt old race car.
Despite proving popular at the box office upon release, the film’s expensive budget meant it was a financial failure for United Artists. It did however go on to cement its classic status across numerous home video releases and also spawned a West End and Broadway musical that launched in 2002.
As per Deadline’s report, Amazon and Eon are viewing the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang remake as a theatrical release and executives from both companies are said to be actively meeting with potential writers and directors.
