Sony and PlayStation Productions announce Horizon Zero Dawn movie in early development

January 10, 2025 by Gary Collinson

If you cast your mind back a couple of years you may recall that Sony and PlayStation Productions announced that a live-action series adaptation of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn was in the works for Netflix, but it seems the project has been redeveloped and is now targeting the big screen with a feature film.

“Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference this week. “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”

Releasing in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn is a post-apocalyptic action RPG which sees players taking on the role of Aloy, a young hunter who ventures through a world dominated by robotic machines. The game was a critical and commercial success, and spawned the 2022 sequel Horizon Forbidden West, VR title Horizon Call of the Mountain, and the recently-released LEGO Horizon Adventures.

Alongside the Horizon Zero Dawn movie, PlayStation Productions also confirmed that a feature film adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers is in development as well as the anime series Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
