Paul W.S. Anderon and Johannes Roberts have attempted to bring the zombie and B.O.W. madness of Resident Evil to the big screen, but there’s a new contender with Hollywood buzzing.
Zach Cregger (Barbarian) is set for an adaptation of the beloved survival horror video game, and an “intense bidding war is underway for a reboot.” Per THR, the Cregger’s Resident Evil has caught the eye of four major studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix.
Constantin Film has owned the big screen right to the RE since the late 1990s and is set to produce the reboot alongside PlayStation Productions. Cregger will co-write with Shay Hatten (John Wick Chapter 4) and direct. This new project will return the “title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games.”
As much as Hollywood loves doing Resident Evil movies, including six movies starring Milla Jovovich, a pandemic-era film, and a Netflix series, the big selling point is said to be Zach Cregger himself. Coming off the cult hit Barbarian in 2022, it seems like the filmmaker is all the rage.
Cregger’s next work is the upcoming film Weapons, which features Josh Brolin and Julia Garner leading an ensemble cast.
The Resident Evil movies are based on the Capcom video games, which see our heroes falling off against the evil corporation Umbrella and their twisted monsters. The films have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide.
