Comic Book Review – Power Lords #1

January 29, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews Power Lords #1…

When Oni Press’ Power Lords #1 landed in my email, I was immediately hit with a wave of nostalgia. Seeing the strong cover image of the hero Adam Power really tickled the old nostalgia bone.

Based on the 1980’s toy line created by legendary designer Wayne Barlowe and now part of the NacelleVerse, issue #1 of this new comic series immediately caught my attention. I was bursting with anticipation for alien intrigue, space battles and transforming heroes.

For those who don’t know this hero, Power Lords tells the story of Adam Power, an ordinary human who transforms into the powerful Lord Power after he gains possession of the Power Jewel.  This transformation sucks him into a cosmic war between good and evil. Alongside his allies Sydot, Savor and Shaya the Queen of Power, Lord Power must defend the galaxy from the actions of the evil Arkus.

This debut issue in a brand-new story from the NacelleVerse kicks off with the evil Arkus having escaped the interdimensional prison, engaging in a fierce battle with Shaya and Savor. Arkus is eager to face Lord Power, but how did he escape and why is he so determined to confront the one man capable of defeating him?

Without giving too much away, Power Lords # 1 delivers a compelling mix of action, intrigue and classic superhero tropes, drawing readers into its fast-paced narrative. With a balance of science fiction and superhero elements, this first issue makes a strong impression and sets the stage for more action to come.

V. Ken Marion’s artwork is beautifully done and the influence from Wayne Barlowe with the alien designs and otherworldly environments is unmistakable. One thing that really stands out is the vibrant colour palette used, making every page a treat to look at.

This first issue is a captivating one, it has a strong start to the story and although Lord Power isn’t the most handsome of heroes he is nonetheless unique. Whether you buy this issue out of nostalgia or are discovering these characters for the first time, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Rating: 8/10
