Harrison Ford addresses Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s box office performance: “Sh*t happens!”

February 6, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Just as he is about to step foot into one blockbuster franchise for the first time with Captain America: Brave New World, Harrison Ford has been reflecting on his final outing in another iconic series of films, 2023’s much-maligned Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny.

During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the Hollywood legend spoke about the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones saga’s poor performance at the box-office.

Ford said in typically straightforward fashion that “Shit happens”, adding that “I was the one who felt there was another story to tell. When Indy had suffered the consequences of the life he had to live, I wanted one more chance to pick him up and dust off his ass and stick him out there, bereft of some of his vigor, to see what happened.”

What happened was that the James Mangold directed adventure opened to a subdued $60.4 million at the domestic box-office, and went on to gross a franchise low of $383 million worldwide. Despite this, Ford punctuated his feelings on his Indy swansong by saying that he was still happy that he had made the movie.

He had no such creative input when it came to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealing that he said yes to inheriting the role of General Thunderbolt Ross from the late William Hurt without having read a script. “I saw enough Marvels to see actors that I admired having a good time.”

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, is once again composing the score.

Starring along with Harrison Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), John Rhys-Davies (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Shaunette Renee Wilson (“Black Panther”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Das Boot”), Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Boyd Holbrook (“Logan”), Oliver Richters (“Black Widow”), Ethann Isidore (“Mortel”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”).
