Captain America earns $192 million worldwide, while Bridget Jones does boffo box office

February 17, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Despite soft projections and a mixed critical response, Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World has posted decent numbers from its opening weekend at the worldwide box-office.

We called Brave New World the “same new mediocrity” in our ★★ review (which you can read here), and the film launched with 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences still wanted to check out Anthony Mackie’s solo-outing with the shield to the tune of $192.4 million at the global box-office.

That number includes a four-day domestic opening of $100 million over the long Presidents Day weekend in North America, where the Julius Onah directed film received a B- CinemaScore, the worst rating given to any title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There were no such issues for the other sequel from a long-running franchise released this week, because despite being sent straight-to-streaming in the U.S., Miramax, Universal and Working Title’s Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy earned an impressive $35.5 million at the international box-office, which included a record-breaking opening weekend for a rom-com in the U.K. of $14.9 million.

Paddington in Peru finally got a North American release, where it performed admirably, adding a $16 million 4-day total to its $115.8 million international haul.

You can check out all of the numbers over at BoxOfficeMojo, and then let us know what you thought of Brave New World or Bridget Jones by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World follows Sam Wilson, who after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

The film is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore from a script by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton. The film stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford.
