Oft-delayed Red Sonja reboot to finally get 2025 release

February 17, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Having been gathering dust for two years in post-production purgatory, the oft-delayed Red Sonja reboot is finally set to secure a release in 2025.

According to Deadline, Signature Entertainment has picked up the rights to the fantasy flick from Millennium Media, and will release it in U.K. and Irish cinemas sometime this year. Millennium had sold the rights to other territories while the film sat on the shelf, but this is the first time Red Sonja has been given a tentative release window since an early-2024 opening failed to materialise.

Based on the popular comic book series originally created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, Red Sonja stars Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as the fierce Barbarian, who is tasked with forming a band of misfit warriors to fight the evil Emperor Draygan.

Directed by M.J. Bassett (Silent Hill: Revelation), the film also stars Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Krypton), Luca Pasqualino (Snowpiercer), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), Rhona Mitra (Doomsday), Martyn Ford (Mortal Kombat 2), Ben Radcliffe (Anatomy of a Scandal), Eliza Matengu (Swift Street), Phillip Winchester (Duchess), Veronica Ferres (Crisis) and Trevor Eve (A Discovery of Witches).

When Red Sonja does finally make it to the big-screen, it will be the second time the character has done so following the Brigitte Nielsen headlined 1985 cult-favourite.
