Oscar-nominated Spotlight director Tom McCarthy is teaming up with Selena Gomez to serve as executive producer on the upcoming Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, and will also direct the first two episodes.
Based on the YA novel by Jay Asher and adapted by Brian Yorkey, 13 Reasons Why “follows a boy named Clay through an emotional night when he receives a shoe box of cassette tapes from his late classmate and crush Hannah, after she recently committed suicide. On the tapes, which are mailed with instructions to pass along from one student to another, Hannah explains to 12 peers how they each played a role in her death, by giving 13 reasons explaining why she took her life.”
McCarthy will contest the Best Director Oscar at this evening’s Academy Awards, where he is up against Alejandro G. Inarritu (The Revenant), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Lenny Abrahamson (Room) and Adam McKay (The Big Short).
