A new Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor adventure takes the Doctor and Leela on a haunted safari

March 12, 2025 by Andrew Newton

A brand-new box set of full-cast audio drama for the Fourth Doctor is available to buy today from the Big Finish website that takes the listener on a safari like no other.  The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Hellwood Inheritance will take the Fourth Doctor and Leela to a safari park where the attractions are ghosts in a four-part story, followed by a two-part story set on a distant world.

In The Hellwood Inheritance (written by Alan Barnes) the TARDIS arrives in the grounds of Hellwood Manor and after stepping outside, the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and Leela (Louise Jameson) find themselves being pursued through the British countryside by a headless knight.  Upon arriving at the manor, the pair are mistaken for parapsychical investigators and are shown the mysterious ‘ghost catcher’ device, but the Doctor has his doubts as to what is really happening.

Writer Alan Barnes said: “I hate elevator pitches – the very idea of them is awful beyond belief. So it was to my horror that one day I found that one had popped into my head! It’s Jurassic Park… but instead of dinosaurs, it’s got ghosts! Actual, live, dead ghosts!”

In the box set’s two part story The Memory Thieves by Phil Mulryne, the Doctor and Leela land on the colony world of New Pasithea where strange electrical impulses emanating from the forests is causing people to lose their memories.  Can the pair save the colonists from the ‘Abeyance’ or is the community doomed?

Writer Phil Mulryne said: “I find that memory is especially fascinating to explore. It’s so integral to our sense of who we are and what we’re about. So if bits of it go missing through an accident or illness, then… are we still us? Or have we become someone else? Has our identity changed?”

Joining Tom Baker and Louise Jameson are Tamzin Outhwaite, James Meteyard, Rosalie Craig, Rosie Day, Chris Jarman, Richard James, Ayesha Antoine, Daisy Ashford, Glen McCready, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo and Wayne Forester.

The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Hellwood Inheritance is available to buy now from the Big Finish website for £19.99 for the download or £24.99 for the download and limited edition CD box set.  Fans can also save money by purchasing this along with the next two Fourth Doctor Adventures box sets for £57 for the download or £70.50 for the download and limited collector’s edition CD box sets.
