A Minecraft Movie delivers the biggest opening weekend since Deadpool & Wolverine

April 7, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Make sure you have your chicken jockey ready because A Minecraft Movie is the first major hit of 2025.

The video game adaptation from Jared Hess took the box office by storm this weekend, landing itself the best opening of the year and the best opening weekend box office haul since last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. It raked in a massive $157 million domestically, surpassing the projection of $70 million to $80 million.

That puts A Minecraft Movie at a bigger opening than Inside Out 2 and Wicked. The accolades don’t stop there. The film now has the biggest opening ever for a video game movie, topping The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023. It’s also the third biggest opener for April.

The blockbuster added $144 million internationally for a global start of $301 million. With its strong reviews from audiences, let’s see if this can be a big blockbuster-type hit.

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival!  Four misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.  To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black).  Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre) and stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Jack Black (Borderlands), Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy), and Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus).

A Minecraft Movie is now playing.
