Amazon acquires Chad Stahelski and Henry Cavill’s Highlander remake

April 19, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Henry Cavill is joining the ranks of Christopher Lambert (and Adrian Paul) as the man to play the iconic Highlander.

Having been in development since 2021 with Cavill, and even longer when talking about director Chad Stahelski’s involvement, the film is officially moving forward at Amazon MGM’s United Artists. Deadline confirmed the story this week, with Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4) now penning the screenplay.

According to the outlet, United Artists and Scott Stuber are in final negotiations to secure the rights to the new version of Highlander from Lionsgate, where the project has been developed. UA’s Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce alongside Neal H. Moritz and 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski’s production banner. Joshua Davis of Davis Panzer will also produce.

Stahelski has been attached to the project since 2016, and the movie began heavy development in 2020. Little is known about the plot details, but it will be an update and is expected to pay respect to the 1986 cult hit. It follows Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander born in the 1500s, who discovers he’s Immortal. Trained by another Immortal (Ramírez, played by Sean Connery), he fights others until only one remains. We also got the famous line: “There can be only one.”

As for Cavill, he’s made quite a home at this studio, with the actor and producer also developing an adaptation of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise for Amazon. With this double combo of nerd culture, Cavill is truly finding his niche within Hollywood.
