Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock scrapped by DC

April 30, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

As the world holds its breath awaiting the release of James Gunn’s Superman, DC has decided to scrap another of its planned franchise starters with the news that Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock has been cancelled.

Intended to star Colin Farrell, who was himself replacing Daniel Craig, Sgt Rock was meant to go before cameras this summer, with the Call You By My Name director working from a script by his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes.

However, according to The Wrap, the $70 million budgeted superhero film will now be on the DC M.I.A. list. The studio are yet to comment, and no reason is given beyond the classic “scheduling conflicts” due to the number of exterior location shoots needed to complete the movie, meaning that it wouldn’t make its start date.

Guadagnino’s Challengers star Mike Faist and Alien: Romulus breakout David Jonsson had also been cast, with the script reportedly focusing on Sgt. Rock‘s quest to find the Spear of Destiny, the weapon used to stab Jesus during his crucifixion, before the Nazis found it.

With Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis attached to failed Sgt. Rock projects in the past, it appears that the Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert created character is fighting a losing battle when it comes to the big-screen.
