John Travolta to battle rogue orcas in Renny Harlin’s Black Tides

May 18, 2025 by Gary Collinson

John Travolta is set to find himself in a fight for survival against a pod of ravenous orcas, with Deadline reporting that the actor is teaming with Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger director Renny Harlin for Black Tides.

The survival thriller has been written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and Ángel Agudo (Apocalypse Z), and will see Travolta taking on the role of Bill Pierce, “an estranged father whose attempt to reconnect with his daughter and grandson turns into a harrowing battle for survival when their boat is attacked by rogue orcas off the southern coast of Spain.”

“John Travolta brings the perfect combination of grit, depth, vulnerability and charisma to the character of Bill Pierce, the estranged father, that achingly captures the tragedies of family dynamics,” said Harlin. “I can’t wait to show fans of big screen cinema how his movie star presence and physicality will add gravity to the epic action sequences and deeply emotional personal drama. As a director, I consider myself fortunate to join a list of acclaimed filmmakers who’ve had the privilege of getting to know John as an artist and a person.”

Black Tides marks a return to the water for Renny Harlin, whose C.V. includes the cult shark thriller Deep Blue Sea, along with the upcoming Deep Water starring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley. He’s also currently gearing up for the release of the middle chapter of his trilogy reboot of The Strangers, which is slated for release in September.  You can watch the trailer for The Strangers – Chapter 2 here.
