Comic Book Review – Batman Black and White #4

December 17, 2013 by admin

Robb Ghag reviews Batman Black and White #4…

“The latest issue of the new BATMAN BLACK AND WHITE miniseries serves up new tales of the Dark Knight from the creative talents of Nathan Edmondson and Kenneth Rocafort, Dustin Nguyen, Michael Allred and Lee Allred, David Macho and Ruben Pellejero and Sean “Cheeks” Galloway!”

This series is one of the most consistently well drawn, well written and awe inspiring titles in the entire Batman comics series.

With sometimes only a few these artists and writers get to delve deep into the mythos that is the Batman. And the artists get to flex their artistic skill, without the assistance of digital color corrections, or added colors of any sort. This issue continues that tradition, with artists such as Amanda Conner, Kenneth Rocafort, the legendary Michael Allred, Dustin Nguyen, Sean Galloway and more.

The covers for a Batman Black and White issue are sometimes some of the best, and often destined to be produced into Batman Black and White statues. With Amanda Conners’ use of negative space and the epic portrayal of Batman on this cover, I can easily see this being turned into a statue.

By far the artwork provided by Kenneth Rocafort is nothing short of brilliant. The detail and amazing precision with which he shows the Dark Knight is absolutely epic. The story to coincide with his illustrations is also extremely potent, and Nathan Edmondson does a fabulous job with the pacing and structure of the story.

The Long Day story, written and illustrated by Dustin Nguyen, is also a great story, but you can feel that Nguyen’s artwork seems somewhat flat with the absence of his brilliant water color work.

I highly recommend this issue, and in fact this entire series, as it is such a rarity to see, especially in this format, a book improve issue by issue.
