Mikey Madison to replace Sydney Sweeney in A24’s The Masque of the Red Death

June 9, 2025 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Oscar-winner Mikey Madison may have found her next project, with THR reporting that the Anora star is in talks to lead the cast of A24’s Edgar Allan Poe reimagining The Masque of the Red Death.

Based on the 1842 short story, The Masque of the Red Death follows a mad prince who invites the noble class into his castle while a plague devastates the peasantry. Madison will take on dual roles as twin sisters, one of whom has been hidden among the lower class, and now find herself entering the castle into “a decadent world of orgies, opium, power schemes, revenge and decapitations.

The film is being written and directed by Charlie Polinger (The Plague) and is billed as “a quintessential A24 movie” replete with “eye-brow raising, meme-able scenes that should resonate among the TikTok class.”

Red Death will mark Madison’s first role since her Academy Award-winning performance in the title role of Sean Baker’s Anora; she was previously briefly in talks with Disney and Lucasfilm about starring as the villain alongside Ryan Gosling in the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter although ultimately passed on the opportunity (Mia Goth has since signed on for that role).

Madison replaces the outgoing Sydney Sweeney, who was previously cast in the film but has since departed due to her hectic schedule, which includes the currently-in-production third season of Euphoria along with several feature film projects.
