Mel Brooks was ahead of his time in terms of comedy, and now he’s revisiting one of his most iconic works in a new way.
Confirmed by Deadline, a comedy reboot series based on Brooks’ Young Frankenstein is “nearing a pilot order at FX.”
Titled Very Young Frankenstein, Brooks has given the project his blessing, which comes from the filmmakers behind FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. Attached are Stefani Robinson, serving as writer and showrunner; Taika Waititi will direct the pilot; and Garrett Basch is also on the creative team.
Young Frankenstein is often considered Mel Brooks’ magnum opus, a cheeky send-up of monster movies by parodying Frankenstein. The horror-comedy starred Gene Wilder, co-writer with Mel Brooks, as Frederick Frankenstein, along with Peter Boyle as the monster, Marty Feldman as Igor, Cloris Leachman as Frau Blücher, Madeline Kahn as Frederick’s fiancée, and Teri Garr as Inga.
The Very Young Frankenstein news follows on from the recent announcement that Mel Brooks is also set to revisit one of his other treasured parodies as Spaceballs will see a sequel film from Amazon MGM+, which is currently casting ahead of a release in 2027.
