With Lilo & Stitch nearing the billion-dollar club, it was time for Disney to confirm a sequel and sure enough, Walt Disney Pictures is officially moving ahead with a sequel to the live-action remake, the announcement timed to coincide with June 26, which aligns with the moniker of Stitch’s Experiment 626.
Lilo & Stitch was a big box office hit, something Hollywood needed this year. The film grossed over $923 million worldwide on a budget of about $100 million. It opened with $341 million worldwide, including a domestic three-day weekend of $145.5 million. It had one of the best openings of a Disney remake and performed like many of the live-action remakes.
Money has been made, but the reception has been lukewarm, with many criticizing the changes made from the 2002 original film. Could Disney address the issues with this follow-up and course-correct? Only time will tell. You can check out the official sequel announcement below…
