Take a deep dive into the story of Cronos: The New Dawn with developer diary

August 9, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Renowned horror game developer Bloober Team has unveiled another episode of the developer diary series for their upcoming third-person survival horror Cronos: The New Dawn. This latest episode (see below) dives into the game’s rich story and looks at the reasons why humanity fell, what the Traveler’s true role is, and who is the enigmatic Warden.

Cronos: The New Dawn is a third-person horror with a powerful and original story that unfolds in Nowa Huta — a district of Kraków, Poland. Players will encounter a story that straddles two contrasting timelines: a post-apocalyptic future and its industrial reality in the 1980s.  In the former, players will experience a retrofuturistic dystopian world in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event, known as The Change. In the latter, players will encounter the more familiar gritty retro realism of Eastern Europe.

Players take the role of a Traveler, an individual working for the enigmatic Collective, who has been tasked with seeking out time rifts that lead to the 1980s and locating key people from the past who perished in the apocalypse. Players will need to use their powerful Harvester to extract their essences and take them into the future, but be aware that these Essences will have an impact on the journey

In the ravaged wastes of the future, players will need to use their skills and tactical thinking to survive against the dangerous abominations and scavenge for resources such as supplies and ammo, both of which are very limited. These abominations will not stay dead for long, as their fallen bodies can be absorbed by others to become faster and more deadly.

Cronos: The New Dawn is set to release on 5th September on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC (via Steam and Epic), and Switch 2.
