Dexter: Original Sin cancelled despite previous season 2 renewal

August 23, 2025 by Gary Collinson

Bad news for Dexter fans hoping to see more of their favourite serial killer’s early years as Variety has revealed that the previously-announced season two of Dexter: Original Sin has been scrapped, bringing the prequel series to a close after just one single season.

Premiering back in December 2024, Original Sin saw Michael C. Hall serving as narrator/inner monologue on the 1991-set prequel, with Patrick Gibson starring as the young Dexter Morgan and Christian Slater as his father Harry. The show proved to be a hit for Paramount+, leading to the announcement of a season two renewal back in March.

According to Variety’s report, the second season has actually been on hiatus these past few months and the decision not to move forward may have been influenced by the recent Skydance-Paramount merger, which has led to a company-wide reappraisal of the entire production slate.

Reportedly, new Paramount Television Studios boss Matt Thunell and his team would prefer to keep the primary Dexter focus on the current series Dexter: Resurrection, which sees Hall returning fully as the title character, and as such plans are afoot to launch a writers room for a potential second season of Resurrection, which premiered in July and will air its finale on September 5th. However, a renewal is yet to be given the official green light.

Are you disappointed that we won’t be getting another season of Dexter: Original Sin? Would you like to see more of Resurrection? Let us know your thoughts on our socials @FlickeringMyth…
