Fede Álvarez will pass the torch to another director for Alien: Romulus sequel

September 6, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

With critical acclaim and $351 million in worldwide receipts, Fede Álvarez successfully resurrected the Alien franchise with Alien: Romulus, but with a couple of months to go before production was meant to get underway on the sequel, the director has revealed that he will “pass the torch” to another filmmaker.

While speaking with TooFab, Alvarez said that while he had finished the script for the sequel, he wouldn’t be returning, and that alongside Alien-director and Romulus-producer Ridley Scott, they would be looking for a new filmmaker to continue the story.

“We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel for Romulus. But I’m going to pass the torch on this one as director,” he said. “I’m going to produce it, with Ridley Scott. We’re going to produce it together and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker to come in.”

The move is in keeping with the original Alien Quadrilogy, for which a new director took the reins with each installment – James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

“That’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley. Filmmakers come, you make one and you pass the baton to the next one,” Alvarez continued. “But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with Romulus and we want to continue the story. We love the story and now we just want to find a director that really wants to go for the jugular.”

Alien fans must be chest-bursting with excitement at the moment, what with this and the fact that Alien: Earth is currently one of the best things on television right now. Let us know what you think of this news by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
