Stephan James steps into the ring to play Carl Weathers in I Play Rocky

October 3, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

If Beale Street Could Talk star Stephan James is set to inherit Apollo Creed’s gloves in order to play the late-great Carl Weathers in Amazon MGM Studios’ I Play Rocky.

Per Deadline’s report James has been cast opposite Anthony Ippolito’s Sylvester Stallone in the film, which chronicles the making of 1977’s Best Picture winner Rocky.

Directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Peter Farrelly (Green Book), from a script by Peter Gamble (Trenches), I Play Rocky tells the ultimate underdog story behind a film that would go on to become the ultimate underdog movie.

Stephan James broke out in Barry Jenkin’s stunning love-story If Beale Street Could Talk, and has gone on to star opposite Julia Roberts in Amazon’s underrated drama series Homecoming. Most recently he was seen in Netflix drama Night Always Comes, while next up is another offering from the streaming service in the shape of sci-fi action film War Machine.
