The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 in development at Netflix

October 23, 2025 by Ricky Church

Get ready for the Mitchell family to destroy more rampaging robots in The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2. Per Variety, development for a sequel has now begun at Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines was released on Netflix in 2021 after the Covid pandemic forced it to be delayed from theatres in 2020 to streaming the following year. When it was originally under Sony for theatrical release, the studio changed the title to Connected, but following its sale to Netflix the streamer changed it back to its original title. Netflix will distribute the sequel as per its deal with Sony, but both studios will reportedly begin a more collaborative partnership for the new film.

The first film featured the Mitchell family as they began a family road trip, one which teenaged Katie Mitchell did not want to go on and clashed with her father Rick about. While on the road trip, the AI in-home assistant PAL went rogue after being declared obsolete in the face of a newer program and used its robots to capture all humans. It is left to the Mitchells to save the world before PAL enslaves humanity. The voice cast featured Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Olivia Colman, Eric André, Beck Bennett, Fred Armisen, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen and Charlyne Yi.

Mitchells vs. the Machines proved to be quite successful for Netflix and was nominated for several awards at various functions. It was co-written and directed by Rianda with Spider-verse‘s Phil Lord and Chris Miller producing.

The sequel will be written by the Molyneux Sisters, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (The Great North) with Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans directing. This will be Martinez’s directorial debut after working on the first film as well as Netflix and Sony’s recent global success KPop Demon Hunters. Rianda will executive producer with Lord and Miller returning as producers.

Production on The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 will begin early 2026.
