Gremlins 3 scheduled for 2027 release with Chris Columbus directing

November 6, 2025 by Ricky Church

Somebody broke the rules and fed the Mogwais after midnight as Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the much anticipated Gremlins 3 has been put on the company’s 2027 slate with original screenwriter Chris Columbus directing.

Gremlins was released in 1984 and followed Billy after he was given a strange creature called a Mogwai for Christmas. Naming him Gizmo, Billy had to follow three important rules to take care of a Mogwai: never get them wet, keep them out of sunlight, and never feed them after midnight. Unfortunately for Billy, rules one and three were broken and, with the exception of Gizmo, the Mogwais turned into nasty and mischievous gremlins that terrorized Billy’s hometown over Christmas.

The first film was directed by Joe Dante with Steven Spielberg directing and is one of the films responsible for creating the PG-13 rating for cinemas as the subject matter wasn’t too violent for an R-rating, but was found to be too scary for kids. Dante came back for the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, where gremlins took over an office skyrise in New York City, but diverted in tone from the first film by parodying elements within Gremlins and specific criticisms of it.

Gremlins 3 has been given a release date of November 19th, 2027. Columbus has written the script with Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein after Toby Halbrooks and Carl Ellsworth wrote a first draft. It is unknown if Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates or any previous cast members are attached, though Galligan said earlier this year a script was ready and awaiting Spielberg’s approval.

“Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,” said Jesse Ehrman, President of Development and Production for Warner Bros. Pictures. “It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven, Chris, and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”

Gremlins 3 will be released November 19th, 2027.
