You can’t keep a good villain down. Having been rebuffed by Belle in two iterations of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and seen a long-gestating small screen spin-off fail to get off the ground, news reaches us from The Magic Kingdom (via Deadline) that Gaston is set to get the live-action treatment with a big-screen outing of his own.

While it’s good news for the character, it appears that Luke Evans (The Desolation of Smaug), who had been set to reprise his role in the cancelled Disney+ series, won’t be returning as the arrogant huntsmen.
Dave Callaham, who wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is reportedly creating a new and original take on the character ,who will be portrayed by a different actor. There are no plot details at the moment, but Deadline’s story suggests that they want to make a film with a “swashbuckling” tone.
The character of Gaston first appeared in Disney’s 1992 animated classic, becoming a firm favourite thanks to his boorish attitude and hilarious self-titled song, before Evans embodied him in 2017’s billion-dollar grossing remake.
